Instructions

Introduction
All World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts' (WAGGGS) members share the same left-hand handshake and you should use this when meeting other Guides and Scouts.

With ten million Girl Guides and Girl Scouts from 150 countries across the world, WAGGGS is the largest voluntary movement dedicated to girls and young women in the world.

The Founder, Lord Baden Powell, suggested a left handshake to recognise other members of the Movement, and it is still used widely.

When asked to explain the origin, Baden Powell related a legend told to him in West Africa: two hostile, neighbouring tribal groups decided to try to live together in peace, and so they flung down their shields, which were carried on the left arm and advanced, unprotected, to greet each other with their left hands extended in trust and friendship.

Brownie Hokey Pokey
A fun game to help the Brownies to remember the left handshake.

Instructions
• Divide the Unit into two groups of equal numbers.
• Form two circles, one face outward and the other inwards.
• Each Brownie should now be facing a partner.
• Check that all Brownies know which is their left hand.

Sing and do these actions to the song Hokey Pokey:
Put your left hand in, take your left hand out.
Put your left hand in, and shake it all about (shake partner's hand)
Show the Brownie Promise (make the Brownie Sign) and turn yourself about
That's what it's all about!
O Hokey, Hokey, Pokey (raise hands over head and bend over to tip toes - repeat three times)
That’s what it’s all about!
