Aim of Badge: To provide an insight into disability.
This Badge has 6 options of which 3 must be completed
Introduction:
The Brownies will play a game using non-verbal communication skills and will learn how to spell their name in Irish Sign Language.
Instructions
1. Tell the Brownies that they have to line up as quickly as they can in order of height (tallest-shortest), age (youngest-oldest), birthday month (January-December) etc.
without talking to one another.
2. After they have finished this activity discuss in Pow Wow what kind of communication they used to help complete the activity e.g. hand signals, lip reading.
3. Explain that some people in Ireland use Irish Sign Language as a way to communicate with one another if they have difficulties with speaking or hearing.
4. Divide the Brownies into their Sixes giving each Six a copy of the Irish Sign Language Alphabet.
5. Using the handout, the Brownies will practice learning how to sign their own name and those of the other Brownies in their Six.
6. The Brownies can also play a game signing a secret word for the rest of their Six and the other girls have to guess what word the Brownie is signing.
