Physical and Visual

Find out about having a physical disability and a visual impairment

Instructions

Activity 1 - Physical Disability
1. The Brownies are each to place one hand behind their back. For the rest of this activity they are only allowed to use one hand.
2. The Sixers give out a sheet of paper to each of the Brownies and share out the colouring materials. Ask the Brownies to draw a picture of their house/favourite toy etc.
3. After completing the activity ask the Brownies how they found it, being able to use only one hand.
- How did they hold the sheet of paper steady?
- How did they sharpen the pencil / take the marker lid off and on?
Discuss
That some people have a physical disability which means that part of their body doesn’t work properly and how that might affect them.

Activity 2 - Visual Impairment
1. Stick the 6 A4 coloured sheets of card around the meeting room.
2. Ask the Brownies to work in pairs, with one Brownie being blindfolded using her necker. The other Brownie will act as the eyes for the pair and will have to walk behind the blindfolded Brownie and give instructions about how to travel to one of the coloured cards on the wall.
3. Depending on the number of Brownies and size of the meeting room, obstacles such as chairs can be added to make the activity more difficult.
Discuss
How it felt to be both the Brownie who was acting as the ‘eyes’ and the blindfolded Brownie.
