Design and build a bridge

Description

A junk modelling activity for Beavers.
Could fill a whole session but I think it works better if split into two successive sessions

Resources

Visual aids:

Pictures of 3 types of bridge: beam, arch and suspension.
Master coding sheet: showing coloured card/paper shapes representing indicating limited resources which can be used i.e. lengths of card for beams or arches, tubes(which can be made by rolled card and elastic bands, straws, string.
3 x prepared designs of a simple beam arch and suspension bridge - made by sticking the coloured shapes onto paper. A side and a birds' eye elevation can be shown.

Limited junk etc:

Paper on to which a bridge design can be stuck - A3 size works best.
Pencils for naming and writing notes
Coloured card or paper
String
Tubes (toilet rolls sanitised , or rolled card or paper with elastic bands)
Elastic bands
Straws
Selotape lots
Scissors

Instructions

Part one (30 minutes)

Give design brief: An arched, beam or suspension bridge.
Demonstrate a folded beam
Demonstrate an arch
Demonstrate a tube
Show Beavers examples of the two elevations for each bridge type

Beavers choose whether to work alone or in groups of 2 or 3, but no bigger.
Beavers produce one or two collages (a side elevation and maybe a birds eye elevation), by sticking on coloured paper to represent the materials they will use to build their bridge e.g. red squares/rectangles for card, pre-cut blue arch shapes for arches, green strips for straws, string for string.
They can write an s on their design to show where selotape may be used. And add other notes as they wish. And name their work, important if this is run over two sessions.

Part two (60 minutes)

Issue design sheets back to Beavers
Beavers given the materials they have already planned to use to build their bridges.
Extra materials should be available. Beavers can be told that they have gone over time or budget if they need extra ( a payment scheme could be added in here but not necessary).
Allow plenty of time for building, they love it.

Beavers exhibit their bridges with their designs. Leaders can add a number label so that their bridge is sort of anonymous
Beavers walk around finished bridges with a chart to complete with number and then: strength, length, good to look at,
Beavers comment on bridges that they thought earned a tick in each box.
Beavers can show parents their bridge and take home as much or as little of their work as they wish, having agreed this with any work partners.
