Description
How to calm down, clean, and treat minor cuts.
Resources
bandaids, alcohol wipes, swabs, alcohol, 2x2L red drink, gloves, washable-ink red marker
if you don't want to waste bandaids, use masking tape and a marker, to fake some up with the beavers.
Instructions
Beavers are at an age of "Mom will fix everything", so this is conceptually aimed at creating some self-advocation in regards to minor cuts and abrasions.
Don't panic, is the message. For themselves and their peers near them. Scouts help others, so let's help our friends too, but be safe doing so.
As you hit topics below, engage as many Beavers to be the caregivers, and the patients, as you practically can.
Make cuts, with the red marker.
Bleeding - stay calm for yourself, reassure others. A drip or run of blood is upsetting to anyone, but, a child their age has in or around 4L of blood, therefore the comparison to two 2L pop bottles. (even better if you can find a drink substance that is red! Tahiti Treat is, but not sold everywhere)
Message - relax, you have this much of this stuff in your body, there is lots left, and:
1. There is lots left.
2. Its part of the cleansing process.
3. Its part of the healing process. (forms a scab)
4. You make more of it all the time!
Cuts & Scrapes Hurt - and that's ok!
That's your body's way of telling you not to do it again!
Don't blow germs on them, or kiss them better - fix them properly to support your body in it's own self-repair.
Safety first - use gloves, clean materials always, and throw away afterwards.
The message of not getting contaminated by someone else's blood might be hard to explain to beavers, so probably better to aim at wearing the gloves to stay clean, and not get dirt in the person's wound. But emphasize the importance to wear them if you have them, and wash hands afterwards.
Point out, that EMT/Firefighters always have them on, or hanging from their belts.
Wash wounds with clean water. (don't actually do, or you lose the marker!)
Dry with clean cloths.
Disinfect or wipe away from the wound always. (moving dirt & germs away from the wound)
Alcohol or alcohol wipes, offer additional levels of "clean".
Apply bandage.
Don't put creams or ointments on it.
Never touch sterile area, never use a dirty bandage.
Leave it on as long as you can, even if it bleeds through. (add a bandage or covering if you have to - kids tend to want to pull off right away, but body needs time to heal under the covering)
Tell adult/parental-figure.
Keep monitoring.
Keep clean and dry.
Let them "bandage" each other...
