Description
Making top trumps cards using the traffic light information on supermarket ready meals
Resources
Paper & pens
Internet connection / leader's phone
Instructions
1. Cut down paper to approximately A6 size (ie a quarter of 1 A4 sheet)
2. Give two to three sheets of paper to each scout.
3. Get them to leave a blank area at the top of the sheet to write down the name of the ready meal later
4. About half way down the sheet write:
Energy: kcal
Fat: g
Saturates: g
Sugar: g
Salt: g
5. Using tesco.com, sainsburys.co.uk, asda.com or other equivalent, look up various ready meals and note down the traffic light values on each sheet.
6. Try to make sure you don't duplicate ready meals but remember you could include different types of ready meal eg, tesco vs asda lasagne or normal ready meal vs healthy eating ready meal.
7. Play top trumps with your cards. - We did this in teams and the scouts stood in a line in their teams and played against an opposite person in the other team.
The time it takes is dependent on the number of leaders/research phones you have and how much the kids sit still. 1 Leader with 1 phone and 5 scouts took about 20-30 minutes to make 2 top trumps each.
