Instructions

Aim of Badge Engineering is everywhere and everyone can be an engineer!
This Badge has 4 options of which 4 must be completed
Option 4 has 5 sub sections of which 1 must be completed using the engineering design process
Circular Motion: Hula Hoop
Introduction
 The Guide Engineering Badge focuses on the practical approach to design: an important engineering skill.
 However, engineering design could be described as the practical application of scientific principles.
 An understanding of these principles is critical for engineering design.
 This activity explores some of the basic principles in a fun way
 The Unit can complete one or all of the activates for this option of the badge available on OGM

Instructions:
Investigate circular motion using a hula hoop works
 Each Guide finds her space and attempts to hula hoop
If they cannot hula hoop on the waist, encourage them to hula on their arm or leg
 How many places can they get the hoop in circular motion on their body?
Discussion
 What they are doing to get the hoop to rotate
 What do they think is happening? (this is not about getting the right answer but getting them to think about what they are doing)
 Can they think of examples of circular motion in real life (planets orbiting sun, electrons/protons around the nucleus in an atom, washing machine, drill, turbines or jet engines on a plane, propellers, wheels on a car/bike, earth 1 day)
Additional Activity
 Have a hula contest. Who can do the most rotations?
Leaders Hints (see overleaf)
