Light a candle and do some fire experiments. Opportunity to introduce the scientific method, run an experiment, and talk about being safe with fire

Resources

tealights
cooks matches and/or lighter
small pot of water
glass jar
safe surface to put candles on (plate)
tea towel to clean up water

Instructions

introduce the activity - everyone is to light a candle. explore what the risks are

What fire need to burn? Answers should be something like
- air
- heat
- fuel

you can also ask them what the fuel is for the candle - its not the wick! its the wax (the wick just transfers the wax to the top so you can burn it).

Let's test the hypothesis - basic scientific method

does the candle go out
- test 'air' by covering with upturned jar
- test 'heat' by pouring water over it
- test 'fuel' by a really short candle

This would work well with fire safety activities in the same evening. We ran it with Diwali night
