Take your section to a local care home to do some carol singing and to share gifts with those present.

This session will focus on welcoming the Squirrels and spreading some Christmas cheer by singing carols to the residents at The Rowans Care Home. The activities planned include a welcome song, a short walk, and the carol singing.

- List of Christmas carols to sing.
- Hi-visibility jackets for adults and Squirrels.
- Weather-appropriate clothing for Squirrels.
- Homemade Christmas cards for residents (previous weeks homework).

Instructions

Welcome and Introduction (10 minutes): Start with a welcome song to gather everyone together.
Walk to The Rowans Care Home (10 minutes): A quick group walk to the care home, during which you can chat and prepare to sing.
Singing Christmas Carols (30 minutes): A joyful time singing Christmas carols to the residents.
Return to Scout Hut (10 minutes): A walk back to the Scout Hut, reflecting on the experience.
Discussion of meeting and goodbye song (10 minutes)



Start with a welcome song to set a cheerful tone for the meeting.

Instructions:

Gather all Squirrels in a circle at the Scout Hut.
Introduce the welcome song (suggest using a familiar tune).
Sing the song together, encouraging the Squirrels to use actions if applicable.

Potential Risks:
Overexcited Behaviour - Monitor the group and remind Squirrels to be aware of their surroundings.
Slips, Trips and Falls - Ensure the area is clear of any hazards before starting.



Walk to The Rowans Care Home (10 minutes)

A healthy and engaging walk to the care home, helping Squirrels understand why they are going.

Instructions:
Line up the Squirrels and assign adult helpers to group them.
Explain the walking route and what to do when crossing roads.
Remind Squirrels to stay close and not run.

Potential Risks:
Road Traffic - Use adults in high-visibility jackets to guide crossings. Ensure the route is safe and known to all.
Getting Lost - Maintain adult-to-Squirrel ratio and regularly count everyone.



Singing Christmas Carols (30 minutes)

The main event! Singing songs to share Christmas joy with the residents.

Instructions:

Prepare a list of popular Christmas carols (e.g., Jingle Bells, We Wish You a Merry Christmas).
Encourage the Squirrels to sing clearly and joyfully, and to interact with the residents.
Consider bringing a small bell or tambourine to keep the beat.

Potential Risks:
Spreading aerosols while singing - Ensure to maintain sufficient space between Squirrels and volunteers.
Temperature - Cold Weather - Monitor the temperature and dress appropriately, recommending coats, hats, etc.

Return to Scout Hut (10 minutes)

Head back together and discuss the experience.

Instructions:

Gather the Squirrels and line them up.
Walk the same route back to the Scout Hut, keeping the same safety measures.
Talk about what they enjoyed and if they felt happy sharing songs with the residents.

Potential Risks:
Slips, Trips and Falls - Remind Squirrels to watch their steps, especially when returning.
Road Traffic - Reinforce safety when crossing roads.
