Description
Beavers learn about Scotland and how the UK flags fit together to form the Union Flag.
(If running this close to St Andrew's Day (30th November) then let the Beavers know that it is a special day for Scotland on that day; St Andrew is their Patron Saint.)
Resources
Map of UK (can use an atlas).
Pictures of: - Edinburgh, flags (Union, England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales), thistle, tartan, Scottish dancers, haggis, Scottish money, bagpipes
and shortbread.
Instructions
Give out the pictures to the Beavers.
Show a map of the UK. Point out where your city is and then where Scotland is.
Show them where Edinburgh is - tell them it is the capital city. Ask for picture of
Edinburgh.
Ask for flag of Scotland and Union Flag. Point out how the Scottish flag is a part of the
Union Flag.
Ask for flags of England and Ireland and show how they are a part of the Union Flag.
Ask for flag of Wales and explain how it's not in the Union Flag because it has its own
prince (Prince Charles, Prince of Wales).
Ask the rest of the Beavers to come to the front with their Scottish pictures - talk briefly
about each one: - bagpipes, tartan, shortbread, Scottish dancing, Scottish money,
haggis (traditional Scottish dish made of lamb, onion, oatmeal, suet, spices and salt),
thistle (the emblem of Scotland).
(Only 13 pictures so will need to share.)
