Split patrols into pairs.
Pairs grab a national and international news story
Each develops a 30 second newscast on the national and international story
Resources
Essentially get a load of newspapers (varied) and place them in the room. Guardian, Sun, Mail, Mirror, Express, Telegraph, Times and so on. (not in order of any importance)
A sheet of paper per person with hints and tips how to put together a cast.
Using an SPL or two (briefed the previous week to do a demo) is helpful

The teams then sit in front of a seated audience at a proper news-desk and are filmed doing their stories. They can use a flip chart and props etc. I usually advise a tea or coffee cup to help keep hands on the table.
From a confidence perspective, it is important to tell the scouts that none of the footage will leave the room. Once viewed by everyone the next week. It is deleted.
Finally in order to meet criteria for a troop forum, the audience may ask questions and some discussion should be allowed. Beware of time as this may chew up the entire evening. It sometimes helps to pass biscuits and drinks out to the audience to keep them awake.
Sometime you will find they spontaneously applaud when a Scout known for their timidity does a great job.
For the more bewildering stories the leadership team MUST have balanced answers ready. Some articles may "express" bias and "mail" be insensitive to certain subjects. On the flipside a "mirror" may also not always reflect the truth.
