Intro
If you talk about WW1 the cubs will inevitably ask why it started. I researched it and then tried to put it into a format that the cubs may understand. If nothing else they will realise that it's not simple and it involved a lot of countries.
Read out the intro to the cubs
Game is played like 'Normans and Saxons' in that there are two teams (Triple Alliance and Triple Entente).
Cubs advance a number of paces when they are being aggressive and retreat one or more paces when they are feeling threatened. The words 'x team attack' means that the team being attacked runs back to their wall/start line and the attacking team tries to tig them. If they do so the 'prisoners' get placed into a Prisoners of War camp (and let out after a few missed turns).
Start off with France and Germany standing at opposite ends of the rooms
Each time there is a country that 'isn't very happy' they 'advance 1' (pace) and stamp their foot (and look angry)
With Hungary conquering Bosnia, act that out with Hungary advancing many paces and capturing Bosnia.
As the countries form alliances add them to the correct ends of the room/playing space.
As WW1 starts and Germany invades Belgium have the Triple Alliance advancing more than the Triple Entente (who need to retreat a few paces too) then have at least one ATTACK where the Triple Aliance attacks and captures some of the Triple Entente before they can run back to their trenches.
End by having them all sitting on the floor as the amnesty is signed and then read out how many lost their lives - to put things in context, the population of Great Britain in 1914 when the war started was 41 Million (the population of GB in 1918 was 38 Million).
Note that after more research I realised that I'd got the Germany flag in 1914 wrong - in the words it is the German flag of war but when I printed off the large flags I got it right!
