Description

Beaver my world challenge badge requirement - foreign activity.

Beavers learn about the cultural traditions of Kenya through a variety of activities.

Resources

Ideally items from Kenya for Beavers to look at, hold, touch, and try! (if available) Do you know someone who has been on holiday there and may have some of these items to lend?

e.g. include - ebony/wooden carvings, beaded jewellery, kangas/kikoys, maize flour (to make ugali), key greetings written down in swahili, currency - kenyan shillings.

Instructions

introduction activity - hoop & stick. Can the beavers get a hoop to roll (continuously) across the scout hut just by hitting it with a stick? Perhaps you could get a large rope and see how many can do jump rope altogether? Talk about cultural difference in the games we play and why.

Greet all beavers on arrival in swahili - 'Jambo!' (hello)

4 activities for lodges to rotate around:
1 - numbers and money. Show beavers kenyan shillings - notes & coins. Learn to count to 10 in swahili using cue cards/posters.
2- traditional dress - Dress each other up in kangas/kikoys & beads take pics. alternative - make a maasai shield using traditional colours & use bright red fabric as maasai blankets.
3 - make ugali from maize flour (although it is a very stiff mixture for beavers to stir) so maybe make ahead of time and do a tasting session. Talk about why this is the staple food for kenyans.
4 - traditional carvings & paintings - examples for beavers to see - ebony carvings & tinga tinga paintings. Have a go at making their own picture.

- Could also do activities related to wildlife/safari - Learn the swahili names of animals? Use toys/teddies.
