Pirate Treasure (Navigator part 2)
Report Copyright Infringement View in OSM UK
Description
Following on from last week's pirate treasure hunt, we receive a letter from Captain Blackbeard himself! He gives us some activities to help us finish our Navigator badge.
Resources
Print out the attachments and put in an envelope entitled 'Scurvy Beavers' or similar:
- one letter
- one empty map per child
- one empty coded message per child
- an example treasure map filled out by yourself, to give the Beavers something to work from
Pens, papers, scissors
Old damp teabags (you'll see...)
Instructions
Tell the children how you received this strange letter in the post. Open it together. Read the letter out with suitable embellishments!
Tell the Beavers that we're very lucky Blacksheep wasn't too cross with us! Plus he's had the idea of us making a treasure map, which is lucky because we need to do it for the badge!
Show everyone the example map first, get them to identify features on the map (where the Scout hut is etc). Get them to fill in their version, with X marks the spot. They should then cut them out, and lightly 'paint' them with the teabag to give them an old look. Put on the radiator to dry out.
Beavers can then do the code challenge: starting from the black dot follow the compass points to reveal 4 letters (N/E/S/W).
You also need to do the 'pack for a short day hike' activity.
