Instructions

Aim
a) To introduce the SDG 13 to Brownies and show them how they can help achieve this goal.
b) To learn about the importance of caring for the environment.
c) To begin to bring in the international aspect of the environment.

Introduction
Brownies build on their own perceptions, knowledge and experiences of the world by learning about María and some of the issues facing her community. Talk about their floods which can be so severe that everyone must leave until the water goes down. Explore items to take in an emergency.

Instructions
Pack Your Bag
Gather Brownies in a circle. Place items in the centre, with Take / Leave signs. Brownies imagine a flood is coming, we must leave until the water goes down. We must leave in small boats so we can only take things we really need.
One Brownie steps in, selects an item and holds it up. Discuss as a group and decide whether it goes in the ‘Take’ or ‘Leave’ pile. If you can’t agree, the Brownie holding the item decides. Another Brownie selects, until all items have been sorted.
If the ‘Take’ pile has more items than the ‘Leave Behind’, Brownies negotiate until only the very bare essentials are in the ‘Take’ pile.
Discuss how you felt deciding to leave things. How do you think María and her family feel when they have to leave home in floods?
Debrief/Discussion
Reassure Brownies this was just a pretend situation and that a flood is not really coming to your setting. If appropriate, watch an animated video from María’s community (see useful links). This is used to help Brownies to prepare for emergency evacuations. Discuss. Afterwards, practise an emergency plan, (e.g. fire drill) that you have in place for your setting.
