Lighthouse and beacon identification

Description
Go up to Vale castle at night and get the scouts to take bearing of navigation lights and write down the light pattern, colour and timings. Go back to the hut and plot them out on a marine chart to see how well you've done.
This activity can be tweaked to use any coastal location with a number of visible marine navigation lights as long as you have the relevant chart. The plotting aspect is applicable to both land and sea navigation for sure, and probably air as well.
Resources
'Guernsey to Herm' marine chart, pen and paper, torches, compasses, ruler. A 'portland plotter' makes plotting the bearings easier.
Instructions
If one scout notes down the light pattern and another takes the bearing they often won't look at the same light as the same time if lights are close together in direction......
It helps to explain the light pattern definitions e.g. what a group flash is, what isophase and occulting are; and how to time the pattern before you start.
