Vision Impairment Mask

Report Copyright Infringement View in OSM UK

Description

Girls complete an outdoor trail using a vision impairment mask to mimic the feeling of having cataracts.

Create the vision impairment mask indoors. Girls will need to cut out the template, use tracing paper to create the impairment, and then may decorate the masks if time allows.

The outdoor trail could be just a walk in the grounds of the hall, or a walk in a park, or something set up by the Leader.

Resources

Print off the template file attached on paper or thin card
Tracing paper
Scissors
Hole punch
Elastic
Felts if desired

Instructions

Set up an area outside for the girls to walk when they have completed their masks.
1. Cut the mask out (girls will need help with the eye holes)
2. Cover the eye holes with the tracing paper.
3. Fold the mask on the dotted lines.
4. Punch holes at the sides of the mask and put the elastic through, tying it to secure.
5. Head outside to the trail.
6. Put the masks on and complete the trail. You may choose to do this individually, with a helper, or in a long line.
7. Take the masks off when the trail is complete and talk about how it felt to be disadvantaged in this way. Was it easy to find your way around? Did you use your other senses to make up for your lost sight?
8. You could also discuss the Fred Hollows Foundation and the work that they do to restore sight in the Pacific. Tell the girls that cataracts can be fixed and sight can be restored.
