Description
This activity is linked to achieving the Entrepreneur Badge from Scoutadelic. This activity around the first part of the badge - Create a business idea as a team and discuss with Leaders.
While I'm writing it aimed at Explorers you can easily change it for any age group, the badge isn't age specific.
Also if you are a small unit/section and can't run it as a competition on your own, you can run it as a district competition over a term with everyone competing to raise the most money.
Once you have run this and the evaluation activity you can buy your badges here: https://scoutadelic.com/new_site/shop/entrepreneur-badge/?fbclid=IwAR0wRQ4z3_TCmNMeX6pURmv_NwNJ--t2OvZCvDpU4YvvPQuqx-cLkX_mTUw
Resources
Pens, paper, and anything else you can think of that will help. For example computers with internet access.
Instructions
Get your young people into two groups and explain that over this term we will be working towards the Entrepreneur badge and we will be running it as a competition between the two groups. Each group will be given £10 and over the term, they will have the challenge of raising as much money as they can. The aim of the competition is to raise more money than the other team.
Before letting them start on idea planning, decided as a group what they want to do with the money raised. Do they want to support a local charity? Or does the unit need new equipment? Do they want to link this with the fundraising badge? They also need to pick a team leader for their group who will help make sure everyone is listened to and who has the final say on things when the group gets to an impasse.
Once they know where the money is going to go over the badge so they have a clear idea of what the aims of the badge.
Explain that this session that we are focusing on the first part of the badge - Create a business idea as a team and discuss with Leaders.
Depending on the size of your groups you can use the following activity if you are a small unit/group it might be better just to do it as a discussion/planning session or if you are doing this as a district you can just run this activity as a whole group. To decided within each group what idea they are going to use to raise the money to explain we are going to run a Dragons Den within there own group to pick the best one. Split them off into pairs/three and get them to come up with an idea or plan of what they think will raise the most money, they will then have 20 mins to prepare these ideas to present to the rest of their groups and the leaders. When ready get each group to present their ideas to the 'Dragons" (the rest of their group and leaders) and then have a vote on each one to decide which idea the group is going with. At the end of this part of the activity, you should have 2 groups both with an idea for funding raising that they can work on over the term.
For the rest of the evening allow the groups to come up with their action plans and look at who is going to do what to make sure everyone is actively involved. It is worth having a chat with both groups before they start reminding them they only have a £10 budget to do this and this is a teamwork activity to, make sure everyone is involved & listen to the team leader! Adults leaders role in all of this should be minimal at an Explorer level, supporting the team leader and the group when needed.
This activity is good to do before/during a programme planning night so they can decide how many nights they would like to put aside for planning, prep and running their events.
