A session to learn about the character of Esther

Resources

Opening activity: colour by numbers or wordsearch

Instructions

Tell the story of Esther either from a childrens bible- getting children to act out (overact) the main parts, and boo and hiss for Haman; or play a video. Explain that the Jewish festival of Purim celebrates the story of Esther, our crafts are going to reflect Purim.

Game: Play a Review Game Using a King's Scepter
Make a golden scepter from a wrapping paper tube or rolled up newspapers. Divide your children up into two teams. Tell them that you are going to pretend to be the king, and you will be holding the golden scepter. You will take turns asking questions of each team, but the only person who can answer the question is the person to which you extend the golden scepter. The person to whom you extend the golden scepter, should touch the top of the scepter with his or her finger and try to answer the question. Any child that speaks without having the golden scepter extended to them is out of the game. If a child does not know the answer to a question, he or she sits down. The team with the last person standing wins.

Make a Purim noise make using plastic cups and dried beans. Put the beans into one of the cups. Place the second cup on top, rim to rim and tape together. Decorate the outside of the cup using coloured tape, pens, stick on jewels, tissue paper, etc.

If you have enough time, make puppets of the main characters in the story using wooden or plastic spoons. Draw faces on and add googly eyes, make hats and other clothing out of card or paper, add hair using ribbon or wool.
