Description

Activity to have a bit of fun whilst learning the phonetic alphabet for Air Activities badge

Resources

Print 1 frog template per Cub - there's 2 on a page.

Colouring pens

Scissors

Sheets of cardboard (breakfast cereal size) or similar - we used thick plastic plates - for fanning the paper frogs.

1 copy of the phonetic alphabet for each team of three Cubs.

Instructions

Get the Cubs to colour in their frog and name it with three letters in capitals in black ink (it needs to be readable from a distance). The letters could be their initials or the first three letters of their name (or anything really). Cut round the octagon and fold the frog on the dotted line.

Tell the Cubs to find two other people who have (mainly) different letters on their frogs and make up teams of three.

Two people line up with their frogs on the start line, (it is easier to fan whilst kneeling on the floor) the third person is the commentator. When you shout 'Go' the frogs need to be fanned (without touching) with the cardboard/plastic plate towards the finish line whilst the commentator gives a racing commentary. (e.g. Alpha Kilo Echo takes the lead but Romeo Zulu Tango is catching up fast, oh no Alpha Kilo Echo is on his back and Romeo Zulu Tango has taken the lead...)

All teams can race at the same time and there should be 3 rounds (two racing and one commentating for each Cub).

After each set of 3 rounds, one person from the group moves clockwise and one moves anticlockwise (so two new members join a static third person) and the racing starts again. (This needs three or more teams - If you have two teams just move a couple of Cubs around).

Note : the commentating got a little drowned out by the cheering and yelling of the competitors but all Cubs tried to do it.
