Description

A game designed to teach what action to take on detecting smoke. This meets a Scout (UK) badge requirement but the game is useful for teachign cubs as well.

Resources

chairs or stands with staves horizontally between them (enough to crawl under and jump over)

Instructions

Begin with an explanation of how combustion works. e.g. the fire triangle. Also explain that smoke rises and so getting as low as possible is helpful.

Set out the room with the obstacles - you can either do this as a relay style (e.g. rows of obstacles per team) or have a circuit of obstacles around the perimeter of the room.

Relay type: have the teams run one at a time to the other end of the hall and back, jumping or stepping over the obstacles
Circuit type: have all the troop run aroud the circuit, jumping or stepping over the obstacles

When the leader shouts "SMOKE!" runners must place their necker over their mouth and nose and then hit the floor and crawl under the obstacles
When the leader shouts "CLEAR!" runners get back up, put their necker on properly and go over the obstacles
