Description

Basic hands on car maintenance for Explorers. The main aim is to have a bit of fun but I also wanted them to be able to think “is that car safe” when friends start driving, as well as knowing some basics for when they start driving. Do as much or as little of the list below.

Resources

Cars - ideally 1 car per 4-6 explorers.
Safe space / car park
Paper towels

Instructions

Cockpit drill:
Get Explorers in the car having a go.
Doors - check all closed
Seat - adjust to pedals
Steering - adjust
Seatbelts - age 14 responsible
Mirrors - adjust
Then handbrake and neutral

Blind spots game
A driver adjusts mirrors and using only mirrors or left and right windows and straight ahead, everyone else walks around the car and tries to hide in the blind spots. Talk to explorers about this and car with different cars.

Under bonnet checks
Oil - dipstick check
Coolant - where, what, how full?
Washer fluid - where, what, how full?
Wipers - save a worn wiper blade at your next change to illustrate wear
Lights - get an explorer to test the lights, others check all working and show them what they are for.
Tyres - test tread using 20p outer band, visible signs of deflated tire.

Change a wheel
Demonstrate changing a wheel, difference with space savers (not for long term use)

Wider points:
Get them to look up your cars on DVLA so they can see how easy it is to check a friends car is MOT’d and taxed next time they are asked by a mate to ride in their car
Insurance - discuss insurance costs, telemetry boxes etc
General discussion on driving, safety etc
