Fair Trade String Game

Report Copyright Infringement View in OSM UK

Description

Game to help Beavers understand how Bananas and other products that can be Fair Trade get from the picker to their plate.

We ran this game with 18 Beavers by using 3 products and 6 steps in the chain, so adjust as necessary.

Beavers get to run around and create a chain to supply their banana

Once all the chains are created, you can try out scenarios that break the chain e.g. there is a war and they can't get the bananas to the ship. The person in the chain starts wriggling their piece of string

If coins are available you can also show how much is paid to each role and compare how much a picker gets with fair trade and without, rule of thumb 50% less for non fair trade

Resources

3 Balls of String
Sticky labels with each of the 6 roles, pickers, farmers, transport, processor/factory, retailers, consumers repeat fro each product e.g. Bananas, Chocolate, Roses

If possible have some fair trade bananas and other example of fair trade products to look at and sample

Instructions

Get Beavers to take a sticker with a role, stand in a circle, ask each of the pickers to hold on to their piece of string, and pass the ball to the farmer, and so on through the roles.

It is fine for the string to go around different people, it looks great if a web is created to show how interconnected trade is.

Once all the chains are created, try out some scenarios, ships are missing, a drought stops production

Ask Beavers to think about the difference between the price paid and the pickers payment per banana

example

2 Fair trade bananas cost 50p Pickers receive 3p for 2 bananas
