Food Fight

Description
Using old, discarded food - have a food fight and learn about waste.
Resources
Roughly, per YP:
- 10 items of soft fruit/veg.
YP to bring:
Clothing which can get dirty.
For cleaning up:
- Brooms
- Hose/buckets of water
Its' best not to leave food waste on the ground - even on grass - as it'll attract rats and other rodents we don't want to encourage.
Instructions
Preperation:
a) Clear the area you're going to play in of stones/excessive dirt. The YP will be picking things up off the floor to throw and we don't want them to accidentally throw dirt.
b) Split the food you have into 6-8 buckets. You'll give them 2 or 3 buckets at a time and bring in reinforcements.
c) Divide the playing area into three - with a "No-one Land" in the middle. This should be big enough to soften the hardest throw by a YP.
d) Add some waterproof obstacles to the middle/both sides if you like.
Dangers:
We must be careful of kids with allergies - lets not use any foods they're allergic to.
The food should be soft - harder fruits/etc should be cut into smaller pieces. Getting hit on the head by a pear is not going to be fun.
Hard foods (like potatoes) could be boiled until soft.
YP throwing things too hard (the no-persons-land in the middle should alleviate that),.
10 minutes: Introduction & Educational Bit
The UK produced about 90,000 tonnes of tomatos in 2017 (source 1 )
At 150g per tomato that's about 600 million tomatos. ( source 2 )
Over half of all food grown - however - is wasted (source 3). About a third of that half is from producers, a third from retailers and a third by us at home. (Source 4 )
The food we're going to have fun with today has been thrown away by local shops - either because it's gone bad, a new delivery of fresher produce has arrived, or customers won't buy it because of how it looks.
How can we reduce our food waste?
a) Be less fussy in the shop
b) Tell the shop we want to reduce our waste. They may stop throwing out "ugly" vegetables.
c) Think twice before we throw old food out, is it really bad or just past its best?
d) Shop more often, and buy less. If we shop for what we plan to use, rather than guessing what we'll eat - we'll waste less.
Wasting less food will also save us money!
30 Minutes: Food Fight!
Split everyone into two teams.
Do as many rounds as you have food for. Collect up re-usable food after each round.
Roughly 5 minutes per round.
First Round: Free Throwing. One bucket per team.
Second Round: First team - target practice. Have Team 2 stand still - they're not allowed to move their feet (but can dodge with their bodies). They can face forwards or backwards.
Third Round: Second team target practice.
Fourth Round: Free Throwing.
20 minutes: Clearing up:
Send half the group to get changed.
Give the other half brooms and ask them to sweep the food into one big pile - then scoop it up with dustpans and put it into the bin.
