To explore and understand why Ireland is part of the European Union.

This Badge has 5 options of which 4 must be completed.

Introduction
This activity will show girls how different stories are presented or if they are not reported at all.

Instructions
Buy a different newspaper for each Patrol – it can be good to get a range e.g. Broadsheet, Tabloid, Local paper. Try and make sure they are all for the same date as this can make for interesting comparisons.

Number the newspapers. Ask each Patrol Leader to pick a number. Then advise the Patrol Leader, with her Patrol they should find three stories that involved the European Union. They should one/two Guides to present each story when you come back together.

When they come back as a unit. Start with a Patrol and ask them to present their first story – in headline form. Then ask if any other Patrol had the same or a similar story?

Continue to the next Patrol to get their first story. Continue around until you heard all the stories.

Ask the Guides what do they think about how the same story was presented? Or was it right it was missing from a paper?

This is also a good time to talk about getting information from different sources.
