Give the girls a brief overview of the festival of Chinese New Year:
Chinese New Year is a celebration enjoyed each year by millions of Chinese people. In addition it has now become and extremely popular event for peope of many cultures from different countries. It is the longest and most important holiday for a lot of Asian countries such as China, Taiwan, Singapore and Malaysia.
Chinese New year does not occur on the same day as the Western New Year's Day (1 January). This is because it is worked out according to the first day of the Chinese Lunar calendar, which means the year is determined by the movements of the sun and moon. The celebration falls between 21st January and 19th February.
Chinese New Year is celebrated in several ways. Some of these traditions are red envelopes, dragon dances, feasts and the lantern festival.
Lion and dragon dances are often performed by skilled acrobats and dancers underneath the lion and dragon costumes. The dance is accompanied by loud music played on drums and cymbals to chase away evil spirits and bad luck. The dragon dance is often the highlight of a parade.
Family and friends come together to enjoy a delicious feast during Chinese New Year. Chicken and prawns represent happiness whilst noodles represent long life.
Chopstick Challenge:
In sixes challenge the Brownies to complete the following tasks:
How many pieces of pasta can you move using your chopsticks in one minute?
Pick the paperclips from the jar and move to an empty jar.
Try to move as many grains of rice from one plate to another using your chopsticks in one minute.
Dragon Fortune Teller:
Use the template to make a fortune teller. Brownies can write a fact about Chinese New Year in the centre of the fortune teller.
