Introduction
The “environment” is a broad topic and can be daunting, don’t be discouraged, all you need to start is a positive attitude and an interest in trying. T
he subject “environment” covers so many subjects and concepts (ecology, forestry, sustainability, pollution prevention and conservation – to name just a few).
Below is an activity which will introduce the idea to the Brownies

Oh Deer
Divide the Pack into two groups. Standing in straight lines facing each other explain that one group are a herd of deer and the other is the food, shelter, water and space that they need (the ‘needs’ group). This shows the basic needs of all living things.
Teach the ‘needs’ group the symbols representing food, (rub their tummies) shelter, (raise their hands above their heads), water (cover their mouths with their hands) and space (put their arms out to the side). They can choose which need to be and the deer choose which need (symbol) they want.
Ask the group to turn around with their backs to each other. On a count of 3, ask each group to turn and face each other. The deer go to the need that is making the same symbol as them. They then become deer.
Slowly the ‘needs’ start to run out. This shows what can happen in nature – drought, lack of food and shelter etc. For the deer that do not manage to get what they need, they join the other group. This happens in nature – some deer will die and the numbers decrease. Slowly the numbers will rise again.

Debrief/Discussion
Discuss how important it is for us all to help keep our environment clean. Decide what special environmental project the Pack will take part in.
