Beepy and the Beavers (Beaver Promise activity)

Report Copyright Infringement View in OSM UK

Description

A story about an alien rescued by Beavers. It has lots of audience participation and a jigsaw to assemble. We used it as a way to get Beavers thinking about what the Promise means.

Resources

Two copies of a picture of an alien spaceship (e.g. the attached picture). One copy has been stuck to card and then cut up into jigsaw pieces (approx. one piece per Beaver in the colony)
Soft ball or similar toy to be the 'alien translator machine'
Script of Beepy story (see attachments)

Instructions

Ahead of time, print out/ make two copies of your alien spaceship picture (or use ours - see attachments). Cut one up copy into 'jigsaw pieces'. The pieces don't have to have complicated shapes like real jgsaw pieces - rough squares will do.
Hide the jigsaw pieces around your meeting place, where the Beavers can safely find them within a reasonable time. We kept one corner piece back, so that we could show the Beavers what to look for. The other copy of the picture acts as the guide (the picture that would be on the lid of the jigsaw box).
Read through the Beepy story in advance (see attachments), and decide whether to amend it for the needs of your colony (e.g. any adaptations to the activity for Beavers who have additional needs).

To run the activity:
Tell the story to your colony
As required, use the 'alien translator' idea to keep the discussion one-speaker-at-a-time (the idea is that only the Beaver holding the 'alien translator' can be understood by Beepy - so there is no point in other Beavers shouting out answers).
Send the Beavers off to treasure-hunt for the jigsaw pieces, and let them assemble the jigsaw.
Finish the story. Discuss the Promise further as appropriate.
