Description

Home-made scraper boards that can be used to illustrate the colours and effects of fireworks at night

Resources

Card
Crayons
Black poster paint (with a little liquid soap mixed in)
Paint brushes
Cocktail sticks
Table covers

Instructions

In advance, take some black poster paint and mix in a little liquid soap: this will prevent the paint cracking as it dries. Also cover some tables with something to help with cleaning up afterwards.

Members should be given a piece of card and asked to colour it in with crayons. Encourage members to use lots of colours and patterns. The card should be very well coloured in, with no exposed surface. Ask members to write their name on the back of the card to identify their work, before moving to the next part.

Members should cover the crayon colours with the black paint, ensuring that all of the colour is concealed. There's a balance in this: too much paint and it won't be ready in time, too little and the colours will show through.

Place the painted cards on one side and leave to dry; this can take up to an hour, so plan another activity in the meantime. You may be able to help with the drying by using a hairdryer or a low oven.

When the paint is dry, members can use a cocktail stick (or wooden skewer) to scrape away the black paint in lines of varying thickness. Encourage members to make designs of explosions and other firework effects to create the appearance of fireworks being set off at night.
