Description

Teach your Explorers some of the pub games of yesteryear, and let them enjoy a little friendly competition along the way. We totalled their score in each game to give a winner.

Resources

1. A stack of beer mats. You can get these online, however I found that my local pub were happy to donate.
2. Coins. I used two pence pieces, around 100.
3. Two glass bottles. I originally saw the game played with milk bottles, but since they are not so common now I used IrnBru bottles instead.
4. Tape measure (for scoring the bottle game)

Instructions

We used the following four games:

Game 1: Beer mat flipping: Make a pile of beer mats, flip them into the air, then catch them with the same hand. Your score is the maximum number of mats that you can catch in one go.

Game 2: Coin snatching: Raise your elbow so your fingers are on your shoulder, palm facing upwards. Make a stack of coins on your elbow, then bring down your hand smartly to catch them in mid-air. Your score is the maximum number of coins that you can catch in one go.

Game 3: Place the bottle: Mark a start line. Attempt to place a bottle upright, as far away as possible without touching any part of your body beyond the line. Return to standing to score. The standard technique is form a press-up position with a bottle held in each hand, stand one of them up, transfer both hands to the other bottle, drag it back to the line, then stand up. Your score is the distance of the upright bottle from the start line in inches.

Game 4: Pub quiz: A short list of questions for them to answer. This can be anything, although the more Google-proof the better. I opted to collect leaves from the park and get them to identify the tree. Score a point for each correct answer.

Games 1, 2 and 4 need a table. Game 3 needs an area of smooth floor. Set the games up and then explain, demonstrating where appropriate, each game in turn. Explorers should then attempt each game, as many times as they like, until they have got a maximum score they are happy to record.
