Description

Our Explorers love cooking. This activity gives some practice with their stoves, however the main learning goal is to get them to experiment with different spices and see whether they can make trail food more interesting.

Resources

1. Basic recipes and ingredients for (bland) meals that you might make on expeditions. We used the following:

- Mac n cheese
- Apricot couscous
- Kale and smoked salmon rice
- Thai noodles

2. A selection of spices for savoury dishes. We used olive oil, mixed herbs, basil, oregano, thyme, marjoram, curry powder, salt, pepper.

3. A selection of dessert items for them to mix and match. We provided chocolate bars (black and white), bananas, swiss roll, sponge fingers, as well as tins of fruit cocktail, evaporated milk and mandarin segments.

4. A selection of sweet flavourings. We provided vanilla and almond essence, cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg and mixed spice.

Explorers bring their own stoves and pots. This makes washing up easier.

Instructions

We had them working in pairs. First, they select a recipe, then cook it on their stoves whilst adding spices to make it more interesting. Next, they choose some dessert items, then combine them together with sweet flavourings for afters. Leaders taste and rank the end result.
