Description
Get creative, make your own Scout World Membership Badge, and learn about its parts.
Resources
A copy of the unlabelled World Membership Badge for each group
One large copy of the labelled World Membership Badge
Materials to recreate the badge
Instructions
Split into small groups, and give each group a copy of the unlabelled badge. Explain that this is the World Membership Badge, worn by Scouts all over the world.
Everyone should recognise this as the Membership Award they wear on their uniform.
Teams should head outside, and spend five minutes gathering natural materials like leaves, twigs, and stones.
If you’re working inside, teams should gather materials from a selection which could include paper, clay, or building blocks.
Everyone should gather around their printed image of the World Membership Badge, and use the materials they’ve gathered to recreate it. They should include as many parts of the badge as they can.
Once all the teams have created their World Membership Badges, use the labelled image to talk about each part. Ask the teams what they used to create each part, and if they know what it means, then explain its meaning.
Alternatively, keep the labelled image secret, and ask the teams which element of their creation represents. For example, ask: ‘Which part of the badge of you think means the 10 parts of the original Scout Law?’
Teams should talk about why it’s good to be part of a world family of Scouts. Once every team has one or two ideas, everyone should join together and share their thoughts.
Teams’ ideas could include that it allows us to connect with Scouts across the world, learn about other countries and cultures, and make a big difference to the world.
