Crash! - A game for teaching and practicing first aid
Report Copyright Infringement View in OSM UK
Description
This is a simple but enjoyable way of either teaching or practicing emergency aid skills at levels 1 2 and 3
I have no idea why playing at riding motor bikes makes first aid more fun but it definitely does. My cubs really enjoy this - far more so than the usual rounds of first aid teaching and practice.
You could easily extend the scenarios to cover levels above 3
Resources
print off the attached PDF and cut the scenarios up.
Instructions
When used for teaching.
Pick a young person and get them to pick one of the scenarios to act out without letting anybody else see the scenario or hear any discussion on how best to act it out.
The young person then pretends to ride a motorbike around the hall (lots of revving noises) but quickly crashes the bike leaving the rider on the floor acting out the scenario.
First responders (either leaders, or leaders guiding young people) then need to demonstrate how to approach and reassure the casualty, work out what the injury is and what the correct treatment might be.
Once this casualty has been dealt with another scenario can be played out with another young person.
When used for practice.
Select a number of young people (around a quarter or a third of the group ) and give them each a different scenario without anybody else knowing what they get. Those without scenarios are just members of the public out for a walk. Allow the bikers to careen around the hall revving their engines as they please, count down from 10 and let all the bikers crash. The members of the public now need to come to their aid, approach them, reassure them and work out what the injury is and carry out treatment and appropriate actions.
Allow them no more than 10 minutes per casualty. Leaders need to circulate between groups helping them with the task.
Briefly discuss as a group what they thought went well and where they lacked confidence.
Swap the bikers out and repeat with new bikers until everyone has had a turn at being the casualty. There are 12 scenarios so could be used with a group as big as 48 young people. For smaller groups you can run several rounds before needing to reuse the scenarios.
This is designed to be like real life so first aiders will only have what they are carrying with them which can either include or exclude a first aid kit depending on what you are trying to teach. (Level 1 - we are mainly talking about reassurance and contacting the emergency services so no first aid kit required, level 2 includes burns and bleeding so a first aid kit might be good - or ask them to improvise (which is likely to be closer to reality), level 3 a first aid kit would be really helpful, but again ask them what they would do without one.
