Learn and get a first experience in rigging an Optimist sailing dinghy.

- De-Rigged Optimist with all parts for rigging including;
- Hull
- Mast
- Boom
- Sprit
- Sail
- Main Sheet
- Dagger/Centre Board
- Rudder & Tiller
Instructions
Split the group into two; those with one or less than one season sailing (Group A) and those with two or more seasons sailing (Group B). (3-4 minutes) (Perform a quick warm up before rigging the boats)
Group A:
- Learn the key parts of the boat and what they do (remember at least 5) (10-15 minutes)
- Sit in an Optimist and get a feel for the controls and the seating position (2-3 minutes per scout)
- See if they remember the parts of the boat with a mini quiz, food may be good reward (5-10 minutes)
Group B:
- Rig an optimist in twos or threes and see if they remember how to do it (3-4 minutes per mini-group)
- De-rig fully each time (1-2 minutes per mini-group)
- Talk about Points of Sail and how to sail with different wind directions (relate to lake used) (10 - 15 minutes)
