One handed bowline. No rabbit, no tree

Description

As a Girl-guide many years ago various people tried to teach me a bowline but no matter what the rabbit and the tree did I never landed up with the knot and the people teaching me couldn’t work out what I was doing wrong. Now that I have to teach this to Cubs I taught myself how to do it a different way and I find it much easier, both to learn and to teach (and I found out what the problem was all those years ago too).

The instructions work for both left and right-handed people.

On the first session I taught this, every single one of my Cubs could do it by the end of the session.

Allow around 20 minutes to teach it, with 10 min practice sessions later on.

Update : I saw the comment below and have written to Gilwell for advice. I will update or remove based on their reply.

Update : I have received a reply from Gilwell. They say that this method is fine and we can point out any potential risks - like a tight rope around the wrist - to the Cubs or get them to try and identify any risks for themselves.

Resources

One chair per pair
One rope per pair min 4m

Top tip. Spend some money on decent rope for knotting. 8mm or 10mm braid on braid is great and will make your life and your young persons life easier. (It is one of the best investments I’ve made).
