Instructions
1. Leaders will remind Beavers that part of their promise is to be kind and helpful. Ask Beavers if they can think of someone who is kind to them?
2. Leaders will let Beavers know that on Sunday it is Mothers Day so they are going to do an experiment which is also a gift for their mums/grandmas/carer/women in their life. Leaders should explain that giving someone a gift is one way to show you care, especially if it comes with a personal and thoughtful message.
3. Beavers will write a message on their label to their mum/grandma/carer and ensure they write their name on it. Beavers will tie the label to their vial
4. Leaders will explain that we are going to create a colour changing flower. This will happen because flower stems have little tubes (called capillaries) that the water travels up, and the colourful water will reach the petals.
5. Everyone will get a vial and the leaders will help the Beavers pour water in if needed
6. Beavers will choose which colour they’d like to turn their flower. The leader should put on some protective gloves, add some food colouring into each vial, and shake it gently so it mixes. The person leading the experiment should make sure the colour is strong: they may need to add a bit more food colouring.
7. Beavers will seal the vial with the lid once their food colouring is complete.
8. Beavers will insert the flower into the vial of coloured water
If necessary the other leader should help everyone cut the stem of a flower so it fits into the vial. Cutting the stem shorter will also mean more colour shows on the flower’s petals.
9. Beavers will be asked to take a photo of the experiment once the flower has changed colour. Parents can post it to Liverpool College Scouts social media pages if they like.
