Description
Clause 3 :. Recognise and name five different instruments, this could be as a memory game.
This activity looks at different instruments in an orchestra.
After completing the activity, girls will be able to identify several instruments and know which section of an orchestra they belong to.
Suitable for GGNZ Virtual Unit
Resources
Cards from the resource below.
Actual instruments would be a great extension
Instructions
Preparation – print the cards, glue onto cardboard and cut. Suggest one set per six. The 3 sheets will fit onto 2 sheets of A4 card when trimmed, one sheet cut vertically and glue on with card rotated to landscape. As this is a set of cards which will only be used 1-2 times, please think carefully about the need to laminate and therefore introduce more plastic waste. Depending on the girls in your unit, you may want to enlarge the cards.
Suggested activity outline:
1. Brainstorm what musical instruments the girls know about.
2. Talk about the difference between some – how is the noise made, what is it made of. Refer to the notes below but do not read out. If they haven’t already worked it out, point out or clarify the idea of instrument families.
3. Hand out the instrument cards (pictures) and 1 of each of the family cards (words) per group. Ask them to put he instruments into the families. (Answers at the bottom of the last page)
4. As each group is ready (some may not get to this point), give them the remaining family cards so they can play memory. A match is an instrument and a correct family card.
