Description
Did this running game at an online Cub meeting and it worked very well so I am sharing it. It would be suitable for any age group.
The cubs need to think up some challenges for the others.
Examples :
Run to the end of your garden and back
Run to your bedroom, collect your biggest toy and come back
Do 15 star jumps
Run to the kitchen, collect a drink and return with it balanced on the back of your hand. (Use a plastic cup!)
Run to your bedroom and find something yellow, then run to your kitchen and find something red
Run three times round your living room.
Note - we were trying to make it a running game so most of our challenges involved movement, but they do not have to - we also got make and fly a paper airplane, drink water from the wrong (far) side of a cup (mum grabbed a towel!)
Explain how to write down time guesses to the participants - so 15.76 secs or 1m 15 s - whatever you need to be acceptable. We had people sharing a camera so we asked for names or initials to be added to the guess.
Resources
Resources :
A stop watch/timer - I used my phone.
A means to communicate guesses - either online chat facility or pen and paper that can be held up to a camera.
A calculator is useful but not essential.
Instructions
How to play.
The leader selects a Cub to do the challenge and a cub to set the challenge. We did it this way to make sure they were not setting challenges for specific friends, we wanted it to be as random - and inclusive - as possible.
Make sure the challenge is very clear.
Everybody who is not doing the challenge has to guess how long it will take for the challenge to be completed.
I typed in the name of the challenged cub into the chat facility and sent it out to everybody before the cubs typed in their guesses - this made it easier for the leaders to keep the guesses apart. I had one cub who couldn’t work the chat and he wrote his guesses down and held them up to the camera and we noted his guess down.
Counted down from three for the challenged cub to start and hit the start timer as we said go. Hit the stop timer as soon as we could see the cub back with the required items.
Award one point for the closest guess. (Calculator is useful here).
Continue until everyone has done one challenge and everyone has set one challenge.
We had a four way tie at the end so Akela set a challenge for everybody to complete and we went with fastest to return.
