Description

A range of science experiments to make something that explodes, pops, fizzes or whizzes

Resources

As per the activity you have chosen

Instructions

**Exploding Bag

What you need: zip lock plastic bag, tissue, vinegar, baking soda

Instructions:
- Put 3 teaspoons of baking soda in the middle of the tissue and wrap up
- Pour ¾ cup of vinegar into the zip lock bag
- Half close your zip lock bag, drop your baking soda tissue into the bag and quickly close it the rest of the way
- Place on the ground, step back and watch

**Exploding Chalk Recipe

This one is like the exploding bag, but is with colours, so place it on some concrete

**Diet Coke & Mentos Eruption

What you need: 1.5L diet coke, packet of mentos, piece of paper

Instructions:
- Outside on the grass, stand the diet coke upright and take off the lid
- With your paper make a funnel or tube that fits inside the top the coke bottle and that mentos will fit down
- Get your mentos ready in your funnel or tube. You can choose how many mentos you will put in, most instructions say half the packet.
- Now with your mentos ready, aim to drop them into the coke bottle all at once
- Stand back and watch

**Blow up a Balloon with Fizz

What you need: an empty 1.5L bottle, a balloon, 3 teaspoons baking soda, vinegar, funnel or piece of paper, teaspoon

Instructions:
- Pour vinegar into your bottle, till it is about ¼ full
- Stretch open your balloon or use a funnel to place 3t of baking soda inside the balloon
- Put the neck of the balloon over the top of the bottle, holding the part with the baking soda in it to the side so your baking soda does not come out yet
- Place your bottle on to a firm surface, now lift the balloon up so the baking soda falls down into the bottle. Watch what happens
Baking soda and vinegar cause a reaction that produces carbon dioxide. As the gas spreads and fills the bottle, it moves up to the balloon expanding it with gas

**Make a Volcano

What you need: plastic cup, water, baking soda, dish washing liquid, food colouring, vinegar

Instructions:
- Fill the cup 2/3 with water
- Add 4 tablespoons baking soda, 1 teaspoon dish washing liquid and food colouring
- Pour vinegar into the cup and watch the reaction

**Dancing Raisins:

What you need: bottle of soda water, clear cup or glass jar, raisins

Instructions:
- ¾ fill your container with soda water
- Drop 5-6 raisins in and watch what happens

Or

What you need: water, vinegar, baking soda, teaspoons, clear cup or glass jar, raisins

Instructions:
- ½ fill your container with water, add one teaspoon of baking soda and mix in until it is dissolved
- Add 5-6 raisins
- Slowly pour in vinegar until the container is about ¾ full

The baking soda and vinegar react to form carbon dioxide bubbles and the raisins will dance like with the soda water

**Make Hokey Pokey

What you need: 5 Tbsp white sugar, 2 Tbsp golden syrup, 1 tsp baking soda

Recipe - https://www.chelsea.co.nz/browse-recipes/hokey-pokey/

**Lemon Volcano

What you need: x2 lemons, knife, food colouring, dish washing liquid, baking soda, iceblock/craft stick or similar, plate, cup

Instructions:
- Prep one lemon by slicing a bit of the bottom so it sits flat on the plate
- With the second lemon, cut in half and squeeze the lemon juice into a cup
- Cut the top of the lemon and using the craft stick mush up the lemon inside, keeping the juice inside the lemon
- Place a few drop of food colouring in the lemon, add a squeeze of dish washing liquid
- Add a spoonful of baking soda and stir, watch the reaction
- To keep the reaction going you can add the extra lemon juice from the cup, more baking soda and dish washing liquid

**Berrocca Pop

What you need: film cansiter or mini M&Ms tube, berrocca, water

Instructions:
- 1/3 full your container with water
- Drop a berrocca tablet in and quickly put the lid on. Optional: blutac your berrocca to the inside of the lid so that it does not touch the water until you flip the container over
- Turn your container upside down and place on the ground
- Watch what happens

You can experiment with changing the variable. Only change one variable at a time, either choose the amount of water or amount of berrocca, e.g. half a tablet, quarter a tablet.
A variable is the part of the experiment that is being tested
The constants are the conditions in an experiment that remain the same and are unchangeable. It is important to test only one variable at a time to help determine the effects you are causing

**Coin Popper

What you need: a plastic bottle and a coin that fits inside the bottle, paper towel, freezer

Instructions:
- Put the empty bottle in the freezer for an hour
- Cut a small square from your paper towel and put on top of your coin
- Wet the paper towel so it sticks to the coin
- Place the coin on top of the bottle, paper towel side down to seal as a lid
- Leave for half an hour in the freezer
- Take your bottle out and hold it near the top to warm your bottle up
- Wait and watch what happens
