Instructions
** Circle Story
Start a story circle where one person starts and the next carries on, adding on the next sentence. You could ask girls to bring a random object to the meeting that must feature in their story.
** Scavenger Hunt
This can be adapted easily to a range of themes or ideas for a scavenger hunt, and should be lots of fun. Ideas:
- find a specific item in their house
- find an item beginning with a given letter
- find four items that start with the first letter of their name
- find an item of a certain colour
- find an item of a certain shape
- If you have a theme you are working on, you could ask them to find related items
** Pictionary and Hangman
You can use the whiteboard function in zoom to play either of these games. Or play using paper and pen, holding up to the camera
** Boggle Word Game
Using the share screen function, have a picture of a 4x4 grid with a letter in each space. Girls create as many words as they can from the grid in two minutes, with letters connected horizontally, vertically or diagonally
After two minutes, go around each person, sharing aword at a time - if you have the same word as someone else cross it of your list, for words no one else has, if it is a three letter word you get 2 points, if it is a 4 or more letter word you get 5 points
** Kim's Game
Share your screen and show a picture of a set of random objects for 1 minute.
Stop sharing your screen and give girls time to write down/draw as many things as they can remember.
Make this as difficult/competitive as you like to suit your unit.
** Musical Statues
Play some music and freeze when the music stops, remember you will also need to tick the option to share audio.
Older girls can have turns playing the music from their own device
** Colour Challenge Game
Play the colour challenge game. Have girls each pick a colour from the following: Red, Green, Blue, Orange. Get them to write it in the chat section of the Zoom or on a piece of paper. After everyone has picked a colour, tell the girls that the colour they chose is a challenge for them to do. Create challenges that fit within your girls’ comfort zones.
Some ideas are:
Red = Sing the chorus of your favourite song
Green = Tell the group a joke
Blue = What is your favorite book/TV show and why?
Orange = What is your ideal career path?
** Get Active
Challenge girls to an age-appropriate amount of star jumps/high knees/tuck jumps. You could invent a codeword so that every time you say it, the girls have to jump up and do 5 star jumps.
Make sure they check the space around them for safety first so there are no accidents.
** Guess What’s Inside
Ask girls to bring a container with something inside it that makes a noise when shaken. Give girls turns to shake their container, who can guess correctly what’s inside?
This would be a good time to use the mute feature!
** Bingo Games
There are loads of free, themed bingo printables on the internet which you could email toyour girls in advance. Alternatively, ask girls to draw a grid and place one word, or letter, or number in each box. Your grid could be 3x3, 4x4 or 5x5.
When you play, call words/letters/numbers until somebody gets a full row - horizontal, vertical, diagonal
You can find number generators on the web if you are playing with numbers
** Host a Quiz
This could be about all things Guiding, recapping things your unit has done over the year so far or random trivia or a topic of interest. For older girls, you could ask them to each bring 5 trivial questions to ask the others
** Two Truths and a Trick
Let girls have turns (use the mute feature on everyone else!) to tell the group three fun facts about themselves, but one of the facts is not true. The group has to vote on which fun fact is the lie. It is helpful to let the girls know they will be playing in advance, so they have time to think up some believable tricks.
** I Went on a Picnic
Play the memory game ‘I went on a picnic and took…’ Girls have to repeat all the items said before them
and then add their own item. See if you can get around everyone and have the first person say everyone's
item at the end.
** Mrs Judge
One person closes their eyes. Someone is chosen to say a phrase like ‘Good afternoon Mrs Judge’ in a voice they choose to use. The person who closed their eyes has 3 guesses to guess who said the phrase. When choosing your person, write their name on paper and hold up to the camera so the person with their eyes closed doesn’t hear who is chosen
** Name, Place, Animal, Thing
To play, pick a letter. Each player has to write down a name, place, animal and thing beginning with that letter, and hold up to the screen. Remind the girls spelling doesn’t matter. Extra challenge, girls pick something they have written down to act out for others to guess what it is
** 20 Questions
The chosen girl thinks of an object and writes it down, this will help the girl to know she cannot change her answer once the questions start. Everyone else takes turns asking a question that can only have a ‘yes’ or ‘no’ answer. The aim of the game is to guess the object before 20 questions is up
** Read My Lips
Put yourself on mute, say something and others have to guess what you are saying. You can also let girls add in actions and miming.
** Rock Paper Scissors
Pairs verse each other, whoever wins versus the next person until you get to the last pair and have a winner. Play again, mix up the order of playing. Or everyone plays a partner, whoever wins against their partner moves on to the next round, keep going until you have a winner
** Sherlock
One girl closes her eyes or steps away from their device. Everyone changes one thing about their appearance. The chosen person comes back and has to figure out what each person changed. Depending on the size of your group, have only a few change something, and they have to work out who did change
