Description

The guessing game where those who enunciate their words fly ahead! Great game to link with the optional challenge of learning sign language, as well as the Guide Disability Awareness badge.

*Can be adapted for virtual meetings by muting the guide whispering the phrase and getting the others online to guess what she is saying.

Resources

Optional: Headphones/ earmuffs/ earplugs

Instructions

Pair guides off in two.

Each player should come up with a list of words and short silly sentences they are going to mouth to the other player.
The person who is lip reading can wear headphones with music playing/ ear muffs or just cover their ears.
Sit guides opposite one another. Set a time limit for each turn, eg. 30 seconds.
If the pair gets a phase correct within the time frame they get a point. The winning pair have the most points.

After you have played the game discuss with the guides as a group.

Were some words harder than others?
What would have made them easier – talking slower, looking more carefully?
Did reading the expression on your partner's face help?
Can you imagine communicating like this if you could no longer hear?
How could you make communicating easier for someone with speak or hearing difficulties?
How can you communicate with someone who speaks a different language to you?
