QR Code Navigation (Woolsery Cubs)
Report Copyright Infringement View in OSM UK
Description
Using QR Codes and maps (see resources) Cubs to work in 2 groups to complete a village walk.
Resources
QR Code Reader on mobile phone
Maps marked with numbered grid and QR Code Points (laminated)
Compasses (is using compass points for navigation)
Instructions
Leader to post the QR Codes at points around the village ahead of the meeting
Each group to follow their own course (either Green or Purple) moving from one letter on the map to the next. For example, all QR Codes produce text similar to: "You are at M. Go to K"
Leaders to get Cubs to work out which number square a particular feature (or next Code) is in to practise using four figure grid references (oldest Cubs may want to start thinking about 6-fig refs, but this is really at Scout level)
Leaders to ask questions and encourage Cubs to describe their route using 8 points of the Compass (NSEW, NE, NW, SE, SW) when moving around
Both planned routes take the group out of the village on a circular walk along what is known locally as Muddy Lane (points C to H) and then back into the village via a field path so the Cubs get a mix of both built up and rural walking.
Leaders have maps in case QR Coding fails, to show the planned route. Routes are:
Green Route: AKMIDLECJHKA
Purple Route: BCJHKFIDLEB
Even if QR technology fails, it is important Cubs take time to find each code which has been placed around the course as this will enable them to know if they are on track or just wandering around.
