Description

Using items easily found around the house girls can make a very simple but effective and fun puppet.

Resources

 An old sock
 piece of cardboard (cereal box)
 elastic band
 pom-poms or plastic lids (eyes) Wool/fur for hair
 Scissors
 Glue/double-sided tape/hot glue gun
 Black marker
 Accessories - eg dolls hat or dress or material to dress the puppet.

Instructions

1. Cut an oval shape to fit inside the crease of your hand (1 & 2)
2. Put the sock over your hand, tucking it in around the cardboard so it will act as the mouth (3)
3. Place an elastic band around the sock to keep the mouth shape in place – tuck any excess sock in the back. (4)
4. Colour the lids for eyes or get your pom-poms and attach them to the top of the puppet (5)
5. Attach the material or wool for hair – perhaps the wool could be plaited or spike up! (6)
6. Decorate another piece of cardboard and fold over/attach to the elastic band at the back of the mouth (7)
7. Add clothing or material or accessories as required.

The acknowledgement links to the Jim Henson video and it is well worth watching for more ideas and other simple puppets made from materials found around the house.

I’ve run this activity with Guides over Zoom and Ardagh Trail Blazer Guides successfully ran the activity with Brownies over Zoom. Simple and accessible.
