Description
Activity as part of the International Activity Badge to make a shield and spear based on the Kenyan flag.
Can be done on Zoom or at a face-to-face meeting.
Resources
Piece of card cut into an oval shield shape.
Strip of card for the back to put their hand through as a holder.
Sellotape.
Felt tips and coloured paper if wanted (red/black/white/green colours needed).
Kitchen roll tube or piece of paper/card rolled up and taped.
Foil to wrap around tube - supervision required so children don't cut themselves on the foil.
Instructions
Show the Beavers the Kenyan flag (attached).
White is for peace.
Red is for blood - remembering their struggle for freedom.
Black is for the people of Kenya.
Green is for the land.
The shield and spears in the middle represent the Maasai people and the fight for freedom.
The Maasai are an amazing people. They have lived in areas of Tanzania and Kenya for hundreds of years and graze their cattle in both countries even today.
5 things to know about the Maasai: -
1) There are over 1 million of them.
2) Their language is called Maa. It is spoken but not normally written. The name ‘Maasai’ itself means ‘people who speak Maa’.
3) Their cows are their lives. Cows come before everything else for the Maasai. A good herd of cattle is a great sign of wealth in the same way an expensive sports car might be to us.
4) They're nomads. This means they move themselves and their cows each year so they don't wear out the land.
5) They hunt lions. Going on a hunt for a male lion (they don't hunt females) is seen by the tribe as a display of great courage and strength. But in recent years the lion population has dwindled due to disease. The Maasai created a new rule that means they can now only hunt in groups, allowing the lion population to recover.
Tell the Beavers they are going to design a shield using the Kenyan flag colours. They may want to draw a cow or a lion on the shield too.
They then need to carefully wrap the foil around the tube and scrunch some at one end to make the spear's point.
