Description
Quiz with 1 runner per team at a time running up to answer a quiz question by standing next to correct option on the ground (each team has separate but matching set of answer signs)
Resources
Marker cones for spacing
(Optional - Direction arrows for the ground indicating return route)
5 answer signs (names of countries) x number of teams - large/laminated, to place on ground
Fact sheets to use for the questions
Large enough pictures of flags to hold up
Instructions
(NB this quiz works best if you have already let the Beavers find out about these 5 countries - by looking at the fact sheets on display or handed out 1 per Beaver) They can also guess - and in many cases will know the answers anyway)
The same approach - a relay with quiz answers on the ground - would work for any topic
You need a large area. Place a cone for each Beaver to stand in their relay formation, so 2m apart from each other person in their team (small teams work best)
Ensure the teams have enough distance between them (across the way) for return route of runners not to be too close when passing - they will return to the BACK cone of their team's waiting layout. Outermost teams should always go on the outside edge for return route
When the first person in each team runs, the rest of team step forward to the empty cone immediately in front of them - and the returning runner then goes to the back of the line to the newly empty cone there - and so on!
At other end of hall or outdoor space, place a set of matching answers on the ground opposite each team (for the International badge quiz, we had the names of 5 countries as the possible answers = Egypt, India, France, Spain and France. Place them so there's room to stand next to each one, to indicate the Beaver's choice of answer. Important that each team has a separate set of answers.
Before starting the quiz part of the game, ensure the Beavers understand how they will move (suggest a trial go of doing a relay race without the quiz element first),
Leader then asks a question which has 1 of the 5 possible answers - eg Which of these 5 countries is famous for pyramids? In which country do people eat thin bread called baguettes. - and so on
The questions were all taken from the International badge resource on main scout website. To cover specific parts of the International Badge, include flag and language questions - ie hold up picture of each flag - and asks ' for which country is this the flag? And for knowing helllo and goodbye - eg In which country do you say hello and goodbye like this 'nameste' ..... or 'bonjour, au revoir (and so on)
Once a Beaver is on their chosen answer, you can allocate points for correct ones per team (however, you can also just announce the correct answer each time, while they are still in position, and say 'if you're not already standing on the correct country, switch NOW - that lets everyone be right rather than feeling glum about a mistake)
Keep the pace going fairly quickly - so others in the team aren't left waiting too long for their turn (that's another reason small teams are better for this game)
Make sure each member of the team gets to have several turns.
