Description
No 8. Explain how satellites help us understand our Earth (weather satellites, fire detection, flood relief, disaster planning) and how they work.
Resources
An object that looks different from different angles (a box rather than tennis ball).
Blank paper for drawing
pencils
Instructions
This activity helps the Guides to understand how a satellite can ‘See Different Points of View’ Have everyone in the unit sitting in a big circle on the floor. 1. Put a simple object in the centre of the circle, at about eye level. The object should be something that looks different depending on your viewpoint. A box is good. A ball or a can is not! 2. Each Guide should study the object for a minute from where they are sitting, then, carefully, but quickly, draw it. The Guides should be sure to really look at it and draw what they see.
3. Going clockwise, start anywhere in the circle and count off (person 1, person 2, person 3, and so on). Each Guide should write that number in the lower righthand corner of her drawing.
4. Line all the drawings up in order and see what it would look like to walk all the way around the object the unit drew.
