Description
Take a solar system walk, share what you know about each planet
Resources
Solar System walk sheet for a 1km walk.
Instructions
Aim of Badge
To understand our place in space.
This Badge has 6 options of which 4 must be completed.
Introduction
Our Earth is one of the eight major planets in the solar system. Minor planets and asteroids are also part of the solar system. The inner planets (Mercury, Venus, Earth and Mars) are very close to the Sun, the outer planets are much further away. Between the inner and outer planets is the asteroid belt. Pluto is used for the ‘edge’ of the Solar System. This scaled walk helps to capture the immensity of the solar system.
N.B. The planets would never be in a straight line from the Sun, so this shows where the orbits are, not the actual planets.
Instructions
Plan a 1km distance (circular or go 500m and turn around) walk, in which you can pace out the position of the solar system planets.
Explain that the Brownies are going to go on a walk to see how the planets are spread out across the solar system.
Assign two planets to each six – ask them to decide their two favourite facts or things they’d like to know about their planet.
Walk the solar system – with the Brownies sharing their facts or wonderings at each planet. Use big adult steps for each metre (for Brownies- every two paces = 1 big step) to count out how much further the pack should go to get to the next orbit.
