Description
PRACTICE CAMP COOKING AT HOME WITH THIS EASY ONE-POT APPLE RECIPE
Apple Crisp (or Camp Apple Crumble) is an easy ONE POT desert that is ideal at home in the oven or at camp in the embers of a camp fire.
Resources
Dutch Oven - perfect for camp fire cooking, or any similar fire-proof pot with a lid
OR
Heavy oven-proof dish with a lid OR any similar "crumble ready" over proof pot - for home cooking
2x good sized & strong zip-lock type plastic bags - tie-top freezer bags will work fine provided they are not too thin
7 or 8 apples (cooking apples ideally, but not essential)
3/4 cup (150g) brown sugar
1/2 cup (100g) granulated sugar
3/4 cup (100g) rolled/porridge oats
3/4 cup flour (100g) plain flour
4 tablespoons (55g) of butter - diced
Teaspoon ground cinnamon
All measurements are approximate - it's a camping recipe... who has time to pack scales?!
Modify ingredients for allergies, food intolerance or dietary preferences.
Instructions
1, MAKE THE CRISP TOPPING
In one of the zip-lock bags mix together:
3/4 cup (150g) brown sugar
3/4 cup (100g) rolled/porridge oats
3/4 cup flour (100g) plain flour
Add 4 tablespoons (55g) of butter - diced
Close the bag. Massage the bag to gently coat the butter with the dry ingredients.
Release some air from the bag then massage the bag to fully combine all ingredients until “crumbled”.
2. PREPARE THE APPLES
In the second zip-lock bag mix together:
1/2 cup (100g) granulated sugar
Teaspoon ground cinnamon
Apples - peeled, cored and sliced (not too thin)
Mix in the bag until evenly covered
3. COOK
In an overproof dish with a lid (if you have one, use a Dutch Oven camping - line with foil to protect the cast iron):
Layer the apples evenly into the pan.
Cover with the crisp topping, evenly spread across the apples.
Securely fit the lid.
If home cooking, cook in the oven at 180C for 40 to 50 minutes.
You may want to remove the lid for the last 5 or 10 minutes to crisp up the top.
If camping, follow the Dutch Oven instructions to use coals to heat the pot - remember to turn the pot and lid at regular intervals. Try to keep the heat even. Cook for around 45 minutes.
DO NOT remove the lid if cooking on a camp fire - you don’t want ash in the dish!
Delicious served with vanilla ice-cream or even a little fresh cream.
