Description
To illustrate the principle of contour lines and show how to make a model of a feature identified by the group.
This session shows contours on maps, explains their meaning and by the end of the session Scouts should be able to identify
• the steepness of slopes
• the height of a feature,
• the location of a scene based on map representations
• differentiate between a ridge and a valley using contour lines
It has information about how to make a relief model of an area using contours on the map.
Resources
You will need the access to the following for the explanatory session
• Selection of OS Maps
• Computer to present the videos, taking the quiz, illustrating the contour model resources
If you intend to make the model, you will need
• Copies of extracts from maps to cut out contour profiles or printouts from the contour extractor tool
• Coloured pens to highlight contours
• Cardboard for spacing the contours (thick like corrugated box, not thin like a cereal box)
• Scissors
• Glue (pritt stick)
• Optional items depending on the finish you want for the model
o Sheets of newpaper
o PVA glue and some water to dilute it
o Paint brush
o Paints to add colour / detail
Instructions
The attachment gives you details of web based resources and videos to illustrate the learning points and has instructions for making a contour model.
Running time does not include the full model making.
