The Hunt for the Missing Sloths (or...)

Report Copyright Infringement View in OSM UK

Description

A wide game suitable for Brownies, played in a park or similar, in daylight or at night, with minimal preparation required. Adapted from the Next Steps module: Using Wide Games in Unit Programmes Workbook

Resources

- Image of sloth/other favourite animal in your unit
- Old cardboard boxes. e.g. cereal boxes
- A laminator or sandwich-size ziploc bags
- String, sellotape, scissors
- A permanent marker
- Pegs (with springs rather than one piece) in different colours: one colour for each six. At least 12 pegs is ideal. You could alternatively use stickers.
- A map of the area that the game will be played in (a rough sketch will do)
- Prizes for the winning team

Instructions

This game should be played in a large outdoor area with plenty of hiding spots, such as a local park with a playground.
The game can take between 20 mins to an hour, depending on how difficult the animals are to find, how many pegs each team has, the limitations you set, and the size of the area that it is played in.

Preparation:
A leader should print out the sloth images attached, or a similarly sized image of a different animal. These need to be pasted onto cardboard and cut out, then either laminated or sealed in ziploc bags.
Then a leader should write points values on the animals using a permanent marker. We used numbers ranging from 10 for easy to find up to 35 for the most difficult.
The leader should take the map, animals, string, tape, and scissors to the park before the girls arrive and hide the animals around the park, noting where they are hidden on a map. It could be helpful to number the animals from 1 upwards so that you can keep track of any that go missing when they are collected again.

Storyline:
A number of animals have been stolen from the zoo. Your team has been asked to find them, but not capture them at this stage, because they can be used to trap the thieves. In your teams, you need to explore the park and find the animals. When you find one, you should mark it with a peg in your team's colour, but not move it or take it away. The more valuable animals are harder to find, so they are worth more points.
Specify the boundaries of the game.

Ideas:
If played in the dark, leaders can stand around and point their torch in one direction. If a girl moves into the light, the leader should stamp her hand, as she has been "caught" by the thieves. The teams will lose points at the end of the game for the number of times they were caught.
To speed clean up, after the girls have finished, you can tell them that the thieves have been successfully captured, and now it is up to them to retrieve the animals. The team who can gather the most animals and return them to the leader in charge will receive a 10 point bonus.

After the game has finished, a leader should tally the points of the animals, any bonuses or penalties for rule-breaking or getting caught, and announce the winning team.
